The History and Lore of Westeros

Westeros is the western continent where most of Game of Thrones takes place. It is divided into nine regions: The North, The Vale, The Riverlands, The Iron Islands, The Westerlands, The Crownlands, The Stormlands, The Reach, and Dorne. Each region has its own history, culture, climate, and natural resources. Here are some highlights from each era:

The Dawn Age and the Age of Heroes

The Dawn Age is The Dawn Age is the earliest period of Westerosi history, when the First Men crossed the Arm of Dorne from Essos and settled in the continent. They encountered the Children of the Forest, a mysterious race of small, magical beings who lived in harmony with nature. The First Men and the Children fought a brutal war for thousands of years, until they made a pact on the Isle of Faces, agreeing to share the land peacefully. The First Men adopted the religion and customs of the Children, and learned to carve runes and weirwood trees.

The Age of Heroes is the legendary era that followed the pact, when many famous figures and noble houses emerged. Some of the most notable ones are Bran the Builder, who founded House Stark and built the Wall, Winterfell, and Storm's End; Lann the Clever, who tricked the Casterlys out of Casterly Rock and founded House Lannister; Durran Godsgrief, who married a daughter of the sea god and the wind goddess and founded House Durrandon; Garth Greenhand, who brought fertility and agriculture to the Reach and founded House Gardener; and Nymeria, who led the Rhoynar refugees from Essos and married Mors Martell, uniting Dorne under House Martell.

The Andal Invasion and the Rise of the Seven Kingdoms

The Andal Invasion is the second major migration of people from Essos to Westeros, which occurred about 6,000 years ago. The Andals were a group of warlike, seafaring people who followed the Faith of the Seven, a monotheistic religion that worships seven aspects of one god. They invaded Westeros with steel weapons and armor, and carved seven-pointed stars on their bodies. They conquered most of southern Westeros, killing or assimilating many of the First Men and the Children of the Forest. They also established new kingdoms and dynasties, such as House Arryn in the Vale, House Tully in the Riverlands, House Tyrell in the Reach, and House Baratheon in the Stormlands. The only regions that resisted their invasion were the North, where House Stark maintained their rule and their old gods, and Dorne, where House Martell used guerrilla tactics and alliances with other houses to fend off the invaders.

The Rise of the Seven Kingdoms is the period that followed the Andal Invasion, when Westeros was divided into seven independent kingdoms: The Kingdom of the North, ruled by House Stark; The Kingdom of Mountain and Vale, ruled by House Arryn; The Kingdom of the Isles and Rivers, ruled by House Hoare; The Kingdom of the Rock, ruled by House Lannister; The Kingdom of the Stormlands, ruled by House Durrandon; The Kingdom of the Reach, ruled by House Gardener; and The Principality of Dorne, ruled by House Martell. Each kingdom had its own laws, customs, culture, and conflicts. For example, House Hoare built Harrenhal as a symbol of their power, but they were destroyed by Aegon Targaryen and his dragons; House Durrandon lost their lands to House Baratheon after Orys Baratheon defeated Argilac the Arrogant and married his daughter; and House Gardener was extinguished at the Field of Fire, where Aegon Targaryen burned them alive along with their army.

The Targaryen Conquest and The Targaryen Conquest and the Dragon Kings

The Targaryen Conquest is the event that unified most of Westeros under one ruler, Aegon I Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Conqueror. Aegon was a descendant of the Valyrian dragonlords, who escaped the Doom of Valyria and settled on Dragonstone, an island off the coast of Westeros. He had three dragons: Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, and two sister-wives: Visenya and Rhaenys. He decided to conquer Westeros after receiving a prophecy from his bastard brother, Orys Baratheon, that the Seven Kingdoms would soon fall into chaos. He landed on the mouth of the Blackwater Rush with his army and his dragons, and declared himself king of all Westeros. He then proceeded to subjugate six of the seven kingdoms, using his dragons to burn his enemies and forge the Iron Throne from their swords. The only kingdom that resisted his rule was Dorne, which remained independent until later.

The Dragon Kings are the Targaryen monarchs who ruled Westeros for nearly 300 years after Aegon's conquest. They are called so because they had dragons as their weapons and symbols of power. Some of the most notable ones are Aegon I, who established the laws and institutions of the realm; Jaehaerys I, who codified the laws and brought peace and prosperity; Viserys I, who presided over a golden age of culture and commerce; Aegon II, who fought against his half-sister Rhaenyra in a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons; Aegon III, who ended the war and saw the last of the dragons die; Aegon IV, who sired many bastards and legitimized them on his deathbed, sparking the Blackfyre Rebellions; Aegon V, who tried to reform the realm and bring back the dragons; and Aerys II, who became mad and paranoid, leading to Robert's Rebellion.

The Blackfyre Rebellions and the Dance of the Dragons

The Blackfyre Rebellions are a series of five wars that occurred between 196 AC and 260 AC, caused by the legitimization of Aegon IV's bastards. The most prominent of these bastards was Daemon Blackfyre, who claimed the Iron Throne as the eldest son of Aegon IV, despite being born from a mistress. He was supported by many lords who were discontent with Aegon IV's legitimate son and heir, Daeron II. Daemon Blackfyre took his name from the Valyrian steel sword that Aegon IV gave him, which was originally wielded by Aegon I. He also adopted a black dragon as his sigil, in contrast to the red dragon of House Targaryen. The f
