determined to get the bible back to jim, tom and huck attempt to scrounge some extra candles, but nat stops them. jim's bloodshot eyes are clearly evidence of how lonely he has become, and nat won't stand for anyone acting badly toward jim. tom and huck attempt to explain that they were just trying to help, but nat insists that they tell jim they have the bible, and then they can make a deal with him. jim thinks he wants help digging his own hole, but tom assures him he wants to help. he even goes so far as to promise to read him the bible, which helps jim to sleep.
when dinner is over, tom and huck go to jim's room to say goodbye. before they can leave, nat comes in with a loaded gun and orders jim to come with him. jim is sure nat and the dogs found out their plan and will shoot him if he tries to run, so he stays in the cabin. but nat has missed jim's skin condition, because he is colorblind, and he only sees jim's dirty, mottled complexion. he gives his gun back to jim, but promises him he can get away if he promises to stop staying in the cabin. the boys wait a few minutes, then sneak out of the cabin and begin digging a tunnel as hard as possible, as fast as they can.
because their tunnel is so shallow, huck keeps letting it collapse on top of them, so they have to stop and start digging at frequent intervals. but at the end, they get it deep enough to crawl through. they flee in the cabin with jim to meet up with tom. once they reach the edge of the cabin, the three of them race back to the door.
