Even though the game is just a few years short of being a decade old, the fifth game in the Grand Theft Auto series continues to remain evergreen. Grand Theft Auto Online continues to be consistently popular on all platforms, leading to Grand Theft Auto 5 occasionally topping sales charts as additional updates are released. Even in 2021, GTA 5's online component continues to receive major expansions, like "The Contract," which brought back iconic characters from the singleplayer alongside Dr. Dre. However, even putting aside the general popularity of Grand Theft Auto Online and all of the base content, Twitch viewership has surged thanks to the advent of Roleplay.

Typically Rockstar Games, or more accurately Take-Two Interactive, has been very quick to shutdown fan mods of certain games that could potentially infringe on its IP. Yet, for all the graphical, environment, or gameplay overhaul mods designed for Grand Theft Auto 5, Roleplay seems to be the most substantial. Players are joining on custom fan-managed servers, utilizing a surprisingly robust system of custom character actions and commands, among various other customized tools and systems implemented into Roleplay to make the experience as grounded and complex as possible. Roleplay moves far beyond the scope of Grand Theft Auto Online.

Not actually a distant relative of Bob Dole, Rob Dolen is a Features Writer for Game Rant. Big fan of expansive lore and game analysis, video games are cool. Freedom Fighters is underrated. Probably not good at competitive Halo anymore.

It looks like Rockstar Games is bidding adieu to both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online. GTA 5 and its online companion first released in 2013 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and both have since been remastered for two further console generations. Rockstar confirmed earlier this year that it was developing the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise - widely reported to be GTA 6 - signaling that the series' most recent release may finally be winding down.

Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online represent the combined efforts of our global team over many years. We want to acknowledge and thank everyone who has contributed to these games, from their original launch in 2013 all the way through to present day.

The first, and most obvious explanation for this error message is that your PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription has expired, as you need to have an active subscription to play GTA Online. To check your status on PS4, from the Home Screen go through Settings > Account Management > Account Information > PlayStation Subscriptions > PlayStation Plus. For Xbox One users, from the Dashboard go through Settings > Account > Subscriptions. If your subscription has run out, then make sure you check out the best PS Plus deals or Xbox Live deals to get signed up and make a return to online play.

The news was announced on rockstargames.com detailing that the GTA Online servers will shut down on December 16th, 2021. Rockstar Games did stress, however, that the servers shutting down will not impact accessing the single player campaign of GTA 5.

This sort of thing would have really added to the social aspect of the game. There could be a bar and some games like poker or dominos at these locations that you could play with others in-between matches. The bet-placing aspect would add lots of suspense to fights. And it would even give players a great way to make some money from the melee combat in the game.
